Yes, in this world there are people who still make things from tree bark. But not so many now. This old couple, more than 80 years old, always sit at their studio with a smile and hoping this traditional skill will pass on to thenext generation in any forms. The gentleman was the former chief of Doulan village has done many great things for his village. Now you can make a bag, a lampshade, or a hat with him.
Snorkeling and diving for Taiwanese indigenous are not water sports, they are part of daily life. “The ocean is their refrigerator, and the mountains are their tool-sheds,” they always say. When they are hungry, they swim to the sea and collect some food. Sometimes they eat them raw, sometimes cook in wood and stones. We can go with them to understand more about their free style snorkeling and diving.
This Discovery tv show gives lots of information about this strong connection between the nature and their food culture.
Before, Taiwanese aboriginals had never known that people need to buy food from a market. Food ingredient was everywhere in the wild and food is to share. They are taught to recognize ingredient since they were little. Now this wisdom has difficulty to pass on generations due to the rapid changes in Taiwan. Let’s learn this wisdom when we still can with some village locals. Collect food and cook right there in bamboos and hot stones.
Another amazing long-lost skill: cook sea water for more than 8 hours to get a small plate of salt. These people have the same belief: traditions are always worthy it to pass on. Amis, one of the group of Taiwan’s 16 aboriginal groups, is a people who live with the sea closely. They love anything from the sea including the salt. This hand-made, cooked with traditional skills, the Pacific ocean sea salt has surprising taste different from others. Let’s come to have a taste. We would help him make it and also enjoy a cup of his special ‘sea-salt coffee’ after the hard-work.
In the Amis language, “PawPaw” means a float on the sea. To care for the children who receive insufficient care because their parents make a living out of Pisirian, the PawPaw Drum Band was born in Pisirian under the promotion of the artist Zhi-Ming Fan and the director general Chun-Mei Chen of Sansian Community Development Association. In early days, the base of a PawPaw drum was made with the root of thorny bamboo. However, because the material was too difficult to obtain, people started to utilize the driftwood generated by the typhoon season. Also, traditional Amis weaving, totem and carving are used to decorate the drum which is an eco-friendly music instrument with features of the tribe and which contains the blood of Nature and culture.
We can either enjoy their drumming, or drum with them, or even if you have time, we can make things from sea bouys like them, a drum or a lampshade.
Amis and other indigenous people use bamboo boats as transportation for hundred of years. Now bamboos might have changed to some plastic, but still a good way to experience their life. We can row in a beautiful spot like underneath Donghe bridge, a pond, or on the sea. The view from the water is quite different than from the shore.
